Subscription boxes have become a popular thing, especially those that deal with world cultures. I had heard of them before, and they seemed interesting, but I never really thought too much about trying to get one myself. But then when my aunt bought me a Treats subscription box for my birthday, I was excited! I looked up what the company was about, and I was really excited about being able to try snacks from different countries.
What is Treats? Treats is a subscription box that carries treats from other countries. Each month, they bring you a new box of snacks that represent a different country. It comes with a postcard, a guide of snacks, facts about the country, and a recipe on the back.

First Impressions: When I saw that the box had come, I was so excited! Knowing that the concept was going to be about other countries’ snacks, I was really curious to know what country was in the box. I have always loved learning about different countries. The country of the month was one that I was interested in: South Korea. I plan on learning Korean while in college, so this is exciting for me! Read along as I give my take on each snack!

The Snacks
Butter Coconut Biscuit by Lotte: I tasted the sweetness the second I bit into it. The biscuit is like a cracker, but I like it. In America, we would call it a cracker, but in other countries (like in this case, South Korea), they call it a biscuit. More on the light side, but it has a fine taste without being too overpowering. Pretty good, I must say. 3.7/5

Choco Pie by Orion: Just by looking at the packaging, it’s very similar to a Moon Pie (what they’re called here in America). To be honest, when I first bit into the Choco Pie, it tasted more on the bland side. I did get more flavor as I ate it, but it was the chocolate that was doing the heavy lifting. I really don’t get as much of an overall kick from it as I do the Moon Pie. The Moon Pie gives me more of the overall package to be honest. This Choco Pie, however, is more on the chocolate side than anything else. A bit too much for me. 3/5

50/50 Sweet and Salty Crackers: They look like some of the American-brand crackers. They’re pretty plain, but they aren’t horrible. I see that there are about 2 servings in the package, with 8 crackers per serving and 150 calories in a serving. This is good for a light snack and when you don’t want to eat anything too heavy. 3.25/5

Toasted Seaweed by Samjuga Gim: I’ll admit. I’ve never really had seaweed before. But trying it for the first time, it’s… kind of weird. Even in restaurants, I would never try seaweed, because I thought it wouldn’t be that good. Having it raw basically confirms that. Although, I am aware that sushi can be made with seaweed, but that’s different. Raw seaweed gives my breath an unpleasant odor. Unless I made myself, I doubt I’d ever eat seaweed again. I don’t avidly hate it, but I don’t like it either. This snack gets a “no” from me. 2/5

Tenka-ichi Ban Rice Crackers: Okay. I have no idea what that tasted like. It had such a weird taste. I really don’t have much to say about it, because the flavor was strong, but not very good. I would place it above the seaweed, but not by much. 2.3/5

Final Verdict: Based on my ratings for each snack, it does seem like I was pretty picky. That said, I did enjoy trying this box. It was nice to get to taste different things. Just because I rate things at around 3 stars, doesn’t mean that I would never eat them again. I would get a couple of the snacks in the case I didn’t want much or just something simple. It was interesting to get a taste of a few Korean snacks.
I liked the box, but unfortunately, I will not receive another box from this company for an undisclosed reason. Don’t be sad though. Another box like this from a different company will be coming soon, so stay tuned for my article on that!
