Trying Thai Food for the First Time

Trying different foods is one of the best things a person can do, especially when it comes to exploring different cultures. I want to learn the Thai language someday, and with a Thai restaurant being near me, I wanted to give Thai food a try. So my dad and I went out with our friend, Nicole, on a Wednesday evening to try out that Thai restaurant.

Walking in, I already knew what I wanted to order. I was excited to see what the experience was going to bring me. For appetizers, we ordered spring rolls and the Gyow Grob (crispy wontons). The spring rolls were really tasty, and the sweet and sour sauce helped add to the delicious flavor. They were so good that my dad asked for another order of them. As for the wontons, I wish there was more filling to them, but the filling was good. The sauce also added to the flavor of the wontons.

Then came the main meal. I ordered the Pad Thai dish (pictured above), which contained noodles, egg, green onions, bean sprouts, lime, and crushed peanuts. It came out in a huge portion and I had to take most of it home with me. Even so, the noodles tasted like they came out of a Yakisoba package. That really disappointed me, because I thought the flavor was going to be fresh and savory. I did like the shrimp, plus the vegetables and peanuts made the meal look more exciting. However, I felt like the dish was pretty Americanized. I was really looking forward to trying the Pad Thai, but it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be.

Despite that, I don’t regret trying the restaurant at all. It sparked my interest in trying different Thai restaurants in the future, and it was a great experience. Trying Thai food was like opening a new door to a different culture. That was just one Thai restaurant, so this review is not a representation of all of them out there. However, I’m really hoping that there will be better Pad Thai elsewhere. If not, I might have to wait until I get to Thailand. I’ll be there. Someday.

Have you ever tried Thai cuisine?
